2 Reading Standard for Informational Text
Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; provide an accurate summary of the text distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.

3 Summary Guidelines A summary is a shortened, condensed version of items such as articles, stories, films or chapters in a text book. The purpose of a summary is to share the main ideas of the item with your reader. Summaries keep the same tone as the original piece and do not contain opinion. Summaries do not require a formal conclusion.

4 Target I can write a summary that identifies the central idea of the text and provides supporting details from the piece that are free of personal opinion.

5 Success Criteria: Topic Sentence: Name it/Verb it/Finish it
Topic sentence should describe the main idea of the text (3 pts) Four details from the text that support main idea: Details should support the main idea (4 pts) Transitions: Transitions are included between the main idea and make sense in the flow of the paragraph. (3 pts) Total Points (10 Points)
