Fig. 1 Graphical depiction of mediation scheme and significant results. This schematic depicts the steps of determining mediation for this study. As the association between temperature (exposure) and lung function (outcome) has been previously demonstrated, the first step for this study demonstrates an association between temperature and a specific respiratory pathogen (mediation variable). The second step is to determine if pathogens identified in the first step are associated with lung function. The third and final step is to determine if pathogens associated with both temperature and lung function mediate the relationship between temperature and lung function.
