1 Correlations LO: To be able to analyse the relationship between co-variables The know the difference between correlations and experiments To be able to analyse and interpret correlations and correlation coefficients

2 What is a correlation? What is a positive correlation?
A negative correlation? Which is a stronger correlation: -.68, .42, or .09? What does a +1.0, 0, and a -1.0 correlation indicate?

3 Variables in a correlation
2 co-variables No IV and no DV Relational Numerical/Not categorical Scattergraph Alternative- NOT experimental hypothesis

4 Conducting Correlations

5 Plotting Data Plot the data onto a scattergraph.
6 rules for drawing scattergraphs… Label axis Appropriate title Appropriate graph Correctly plotted data Correct intervals on axis Line of best fit- not through zero!

6 The Correlation Coefficient
The correlation coefficient tells us how closely data in a scattergraph falls along a straight line. The closer the value is to 1, the more aligned or related the data is. 1 or -1 tells us that the data set is perfectly aligned/related. Data sets close to zero show little to no relationship. What would you estimate to be the Correlation Coefficient? What does this mean?

7 Drawing a Conclusion Which hypothesis do you accept or reject?
What does this mean?

8 Why would we ever use a correlation?
Strengths Weaknesses

9 Complete… Can you be too laid back?
HW: A correlational crossword study
