Quantum Mechanics
2
Your Job Write what’s in yellow on the back of four quadrants
Then, answer the questions on the front of each quadrant, then add color
3
Do plants need light to grow?
4
Light The quantum mechanical model developed as a result of scientists trying to explain the behavior of light Assumed it consisted of particles Discovered light actually consists of waves by 1900
5
Light Question Amplitude: wave’s height from zero to the crest
Wavelength: distance between crests Frequency: # wave cycles to pass a given point per unit of time. The product of frequency and wavelength always equals a constant, the speed of light Question How are wavelength and frequency related?
6
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Electromagnetic radiation includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet waves, X-rays, and gamma rays Sunlight consists of light with a continuous range of wavelengths and frequencies. When sunlight passes through a prism, the frequencies separate into a spectrum of colors. Question What color in the visible spectrum has the longest wavelength?
7
Atomic Spectra When atoms absorbs energy, electrons move into higher energy levels. These electrons then lose energy by emitting light when they return to lower energy levels. Atomic emission spectrum: the frequencies of light emitted by an electron. Is different for each element (like a fingerprint) Ground State vs. Excited State Ground state; lowest possible energy an electron can have Excited state: the level the electron jumps to.
8
Quantum Mechanics The idea that electrons were described as waves and particles was difficult for scientists to accept. Photon: a quantum of light; a discrete bundle of electromagnetic energy that interacts with matter similarly to particles. Heisenberg Uncertainty principle: it’s impossible to know exactly both the velocity and the position of a particle at the same time.
9
CUT AND MATCH activity!!!
10
Quick Draw!!! Write the following words on small pieces of paper
Amplitude Wavelength Frequency Electromagnetic radiation Atomic emissions spectrum Ground state Photon Heisenberg uncertainty principle Quantum mechanical model Visible light
11
wave’s height from zero to the crest
12
# wave cycles to pass a given point per unit of time.
13
The lowest energy level an electron can occupy
14
distance between crests
15
A “packet” of light. A quanta of energy
16
The idea that you cannot know both the location and velocity of an electron
17
Consists of gamma rays, x rays, UV, visible, infrared, micro, radar, and radio waves
18
The fingerprint of an element
The fingerprint of an element. Discrete lines of electromagnetic waves (or color) that an excited atom gives off. Seen through a prism
19
The fuzzy cloud model. Where electron location is based on probability
