Vocabulary Review A ratio is a comparison of two quantities by division. EX: 17 out of 20 students, or A rate is a special type of ratio comparing two quantities with different units. EX: Driving 120 miles in 2 hours, or A unit rate is a rate that is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1 unit.

Finding UNIT RATE Example 1: Andy biked 24 miles in 4 hours. If he traveled at a constant speed, how many miles did he ride in 1 hour? Write a verbal model of what you are comparing. Substitute in the values given for each quantity. Since a unit rate has a denominator of 1 unit, divide the numerator and denominator by 4. Andy biked 6 miles per hour.
