Energy Metabolism
2
This mini introduction will break down some of the terms associated with Energy Metabolism.
I have made some drawings that even if you do not remember anything else, you will remember my terrible drawings!!! Purpose
3
What nutrients are involved in Energy Metabolism?
How many calories do each of these nutrients contribute? What nutrients are involved in Energy Metabolism?
4
Sum of the breakdown of Carbs, Proteins, and Fats and all other chemical reactions in living cells.
Energy Metabolism- all the ways the body obtains and uses energy from food. Metabolism
5
How we get our energy Photosynthesis- plants make simple sugar from carbon dioxide plus sun energy Humans eat the plants or the animals that ate the plants Energy is provided to the body
6
Release of Energy
7
Where does all this take place?
8
Trillions of cells, but the liver cells conduct the most versatile and metabolically active.
Look at the Figure in the book to analyze more of the role of liver cells Liver Cells
9
Anabolic and Catabolic
10
Energy Transfer

Helpers in the Process Enzymes and coenzymes
Metabolic reactions require enzymes to facilitate action. Many cases the enzyme needs help also. Enzyme- proteins that facilitate chemical reactions with out being changed in the process. Coenzyme- work with enzymes to facilitate enzyme activity Without its coenzyme an enzyme can’t function. Helpers in the Process
