Accident during Worlds 2006
In flight 5, there was a collision between balloon 19 and balloon 28 resulting in a serious accident. Balloon 28 had been descending but the pilot had seen the climbing balloon 19 below. Balloon 28 stopped the descent and was level or climbing at the time of the collision. The basket of balloon 28 made contact with the envelope of balloon 19 at about 1000 ft AGL. The burner frame of #28 got stuck on a horizontal loadtape of #19. After a while the balloons separated causing a big hole in the envelope in #19. Balloon 19 started a rapid descent but the pilot managed to arrest the descent by throwing out 3 fuel tanks and by burning through the bottom of the envelope. Enough lift was created and the balloon landed safely. No injuries but the balloon was destroyed.

Problem is first a question on pilot behavior
Problem is first a question on pilot behavior. I hoped this accident would change things about the dangerous flying that is causing collisions, but this did not happen. This problem, like my collision could happen to anyone. Michel LeBlanc Happy to be here

Discussions How can we avoid this type of accidents?
Have you been involved in collision or near collision? How can we avoid this? Is there something in completion such as “Target fixation”?
