Important to Know The Holocaust led to death an estimated 6 million Jews and 6 million non – Jews Jews were viewed as inferior as were other groups (gypsies, gays, handicapped, blacks) Process for the Holocaust took place slowly and systematically

Nazi Persecution of the Jews
After Nazis seized power they began to take away Jewish rights Nuremberg Laws – 1935 Stripped Citizenship Barred marriage Took voting rights / public office Barred employment in many fields

Why did the Jews stay? With a partner try and figure out 3 reasons why the Jews might have stayed in Germany when this was happening 1) Generations of family had lived there 2) Many could not have foretold of the dangers 3) Things will get better….right?

Why didn’t more Jews come to America?
Germany made it hard to leave, forcing Jews to leave behind all their money and things US anti-Semetic attitudes US anti-immigrant attitudes (sound familiar?) Jobs competition in 1930s was fierce St. Louis incident

What was Kristallnacht?
Means “night of the broken glass” Wave of anti-Jewish riots in Germany / Austria and parts of Czech Instigated by Nazi party officials Police were forbidden to interfere – 7,500 Jewish businesses and synagogues were destroyed – 90 dead Gestapo begin arresting Jews / confiscating insurance payments

The Final Solution In your text books read page on the Final Solution. As you read create a Venn Diagram comparing Concentration Camps and extermination Camps. Afterwards we will watch a short video on Auschwitz and look at some pictures WARNING: Some pictures are graphic

This is a clip from the movie Schindler’s List. Make a list of things you notice the Germans did when forcing the Jewish people out of the ghetto.
