9 What do you notice about these coastal landscapes?
What makes them different?

10 Coastal Landscapes as a system
What do we mean by a “system”? 1) Stick the following diagram in the centre of your page and label the inputs, processes, outputs and stores that are taking place.

11 Coastal Landscapes as a system

12 Learning objectives: To describe and explain the inputs, processes and outputs of coastal landscapes. To describe the flows of energy and material through the coastal systems. To describe and explain sediment cells.

13 Coastal Landscapes as a system
Is this system open or closed? Read page 2 2) Add to your diagram (maybe in a different colour), to include all the inputs, processes, outputs and stores. Make sure you include the meanings and examples for words such as kinetic, potential and thermal. Include a key (highlighters) to clearly show which are inputs, processes, outputs and stores. 3) Why is the coastal system classed as open? 4) Define the following terms in relation to the coastal system: Equilibrium Dynamic equilibrium Negative feedback

14 Coastal Landscapes as a system
What is this diagram showing?

15 Coastal Landscapes as a system
5) What is a sediment cell? 6) What determines the boundaries of sediment cells? 7) Explain why sediment cells are not completely closed.

16 Plenary Why is it useful to divide the UK’s coastline into sediment cells?
