3
Properties of Water Polarity
A water molecule is a “polar” molecule: slightly positive in one area and slightly negative in another area Water molecules are highly attracted to one another
4
Properties of Water Surface Tension
Because of the polarity, water molecules are very attracted to each other, even more than it is attracted to air. Water forms a “skin” on the surface. There are two types of surface tension
5
Properties of Water Cohesion The attraction between water molecules.
Water sticks to water
6
Properties of Water Adhesion
The attraction between water molecules and other substances Water sticks to other things
7
pH – is a measure of how acidic or basic something is
7 is neutral < 7 is acidic > 7 is basic
9
Properties of Water High Specific Heat - heat required to raise the temperature by 1 degree The higher the specific heat, the longer it takes to heat up a substance Higher S.H = more energy to heat up
11
Specific Heat plays a role in ecosystems
12
Properties of Water High Heat of Vaporization
Heat of vaporization is the energy required to convert liquid water to a gas. The faster the liquid evaporates the lower the heat of vaporization. Faster evaporation = lower heat of vaporization When a liquid changes into a gas it is called evaporation
