Presentation on theme: "Variables and Expressions 1-1"— Presentation transcript:

1 Variables and Expressions 1-1
Translating word phrases into algebraic phrases

2 Vocabulary Variable – a symbol, usually a letter that represents an unknown number Example: 5 + a (a is unknown, it is the variable)

3 Vocabulary (cont) Algebraic expression – a mathematical phrase that includes one or more variables, written with numbers and symbols Example: 6m + 7

4 Vocabulary (cont) Word phrase - a math expression written out in words rather than numbers and symbols Example: 7 more than 6 times a number.

5 Vocabulary (continued)
Order of Operations: the correct order of performing different operations to simplify expressions. PEMDAS Parenthesis (any operations inside) Exponents (simplify powers) Multiply and divide from left to right Add and subtract from left to right

6 Evaluating expressions
Simply replace each variable with the given number. Example: What is the value of x2 + x -12 ÷ y2 if x = 5 and y = 2 ? – 12 ÷ 22 – 12 ÷ 4 – 3 30 – 3 27

7 Exit Ticket 1. Translate: The sum of 3 and 4 times a number x
2. Translate: The difference of 10 and a number. 3. Simplify: (32 + 2) + 8 ÷ 2 4. Simplify: 8 – 4 + 2 5. Simplify x2 – 2y + z if x = 2, y = -2, z = 1
