Encouraged others to invest in China (country collapsed in 1911) Caribbean and Central America opposed US influence Anti-colonization abroad and anti-imperialism at home growing stronger

7 Anti-Imperialism After the annexation of the Philippines, anti-imperialism feelings grew Anti-Imperialist League-mostly upper-middle-class professionals

8 MORAL ARGUMENTS Racism was the foundation for imperialism and it was morally wrong to think of Anglo-Saxons as superior to other races POLITICAL ARGUMENTS Imperialism was a rejection of the principle “liberty for all” and endangered the nation’s democratic institutions PRACTICAL ARGUMENTS Expansion was expensive to achieve and maintain. Immigrants from annexed territories would take American jobs.

But wait, what was the appeal of imperialism? (other than the obvious economic reasons) AMERICAN IMAGINATION With the closing of the frontier, many thought the expansionist policy would keep the competitive edge IMPERIALIST HEROES They were honored in the media and became part of culture Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts

10 HUH? Well…. Did other countries praise us? Did they welcome our “help”
Did they resent us getting involved? YES YES YES YES YES!! Paradox of Power! Admired and hated, welcomed and rejected Some wanted help, wanted protection Some were resentful Even after help they wanted us to leave….
