2014-2015 Maryland HCW Influenza Vaccination Survey Highlights
Statewide Vaccination Rates Hospital Health Care Personnel: 96.9% Exceeds the CDC national estimated rate* for HCWs in hospital settings of 90.4% Nursing Home Health Care Workers: 85.5% Exceeds the CDC national estimated rate* for HCWs in long term care of 63.9% Assisted Living Facility Staff: 57.9% Increased staff vaccination rate by 4.7% since MHCC conducts an annual survey that collects the number of staff working in nursing homes and assisted living residences of 10 beds or more that receive influenza vaccine The elderly and persons with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for influenza-related complications and death than the general population influenza season spanned the influenza collection period covered October 1, 2014 – March 31, 2015, which is the same reporting period as the CDC National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) that collects the hospital healthcare worker influenza vaccination data. 100% of the 230 Nursing Homes and 376 Assisted Living Facilities with >10 beds completed the survey this year (count includes AL facilities that had combined reports) AL facilities with 10 beds or more have been required to complete the survey since 2012 * CDC estimates reported for flu season on September 18, 2015

Hospital Health Care Worker Survey Data was entered in the CDC NHSN Surveillance System NHSN Definitions applied 1) Flu season time period: October 1, 2014 – March 31, 2015 2) Employee: all persons who received a paycheck from the health facility regardless of clinical responsibility or patient contact Includes licensed independent practitioners (physicians, advance practice nurses, and physician assistants), adult students/trainees, volunteers and other contract personnel working in the hospital inpatient and outpatient departments 3) Denominator: all employees who were physically present in the facility for at least one working day during the flu season

CDC recommendations include expanding the number of HCF that offer on-site vaccination at no or low cost; offer vaccination over multiple days and utilize the LTC web-based toolkit that provides access to free resources, promotional material, strategies and educational materials. Declinations fall mostly into the “other” reasons (39%) or 6,430 staff
