My Expectations Improving student comprehension in both literature and informational text Improve essay and extended response writing Increase vocabulary and knowledge or word meanings Provide test taking strategies To provide a safe, engaging, teaching environment Students are to do their best. Student should be RESPONSIBLE and RESPECTFUL. Build a partnership with parents/guardians to develop successful students

What can parents/guardians do to help?
Monitor home learning Foster child’s responsibility routines Emphasize child's independence Support home-school connections Check grades via parent-portal regularly Encourage your child to read at home Contact the teacher via: Parent/teacher conference Support in any way you can! Volunteer (please see Ms. Forbes)

Things to leave at home…
Please make sure you child comes to class ready to learn. Students should NOT bring… Fidget spinners Slime Toys of any kind Electronic items will be turned in to the office for parent pick up. All other will be taken a possibly disposed of.

Homeroom/Attendance Policy
Free breakfast from 7:45 to 8:15 AM. Students are picked up by 8:20-8:25. Students must be prompt. Tardy starts at 8:36 AM STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS Consequences if too many absences/tardies (field trips, attendance committee, retention) Excused Absences are limited to: doctor appointments, illness, death in the family, and religious holidays Please bring a note with your child once s/he returns to school.

Intensive reading Students are in this class based on their previous year’s FSA scores. This class focuses on comprehension skills, vocabulary, grammar, and writing in response to text dependent questions. We will also work with novels and informational text outside of the workbook to add depth to the instruction.

English Language Arts…
This class will focus on literature and informational text. Students will work on the following standards: Citing Text Evidence Main Idea Comparing and Contrasting across the standards Theme, Central Message Figurative Language Essay Writing

A cold read is a test where the student has NOT read the selection before, however, the questions focus on the standard/ Cold read assessments help the student to prepare for the end of the year FSA

Grading Scale Grades are WEIGHTED ELA : 60% Assessment 35 % Classwork

!! DEFINITELY !! Time out Detention: served during lunch…given to those who are not following the rules and/or incomplete home learning assignments. call home sent to the office field trips will not be given to the student Parent conference may be required before student can return to my class.

Student/Parent Portal
STUDENT PORTAL User name type: student ID Initial password two digit birth month, four digit birth year followed by the letters pw OR 2-digit birth month, 2-digit birth month, 2-digit birth year followed by their initials (eg: April 5, 1979 = pw) OR (eg: April 5, 1979 = nf) Takes 24 hours after you are registered with the Student Portal to be able to change your initial password in the Password Management/P-Synch system. After the 24 hour period, login to the Password Management/P-Synch from the Student Access screen using your user ID and initial password. PARENT PORTAL To create a new Parent Account you must obtain the following: Your child's MDCPS student ID Parent 6 Digit PIN number (to obtain go to the main office with a picture id) Students Date of Birth (DOB) Student birth place State or Country Zip Code
