Read through what you need to complete to prepare for our unit test on Friday. Upcoming Dates- Add to planner or phone!! Wednesday 5/23 – Reflection & Vocab DUE Thursday 5/24 – Gene Regulation TEST Friday 5/25 – Notebook Due!! I can… Explain how marine organisms use proteins. Homework: Reflection and Vocab – 5/23 Gene Regulation Test 5/24

2 Today’s Goals Work Time – 10 minutes Reflection and Vocabulary Creatures of Light – Movie minutes Find your notes from a few weeks ago – sub will give you a notes sheet if you need one! Complete notes while watching movie.

3 Creatures of Light - Movie Notes
Create the following chart in journal to complete: Many Uses of Bioluminescence Name of Organism (general) What part of the organism lights up Explain how they use the trait Communication Food Location Prey Attraction Camouflage Self-Defense Mating

4 The Chemistry of Bioluminescence
Creatures of Light Find your notes from a few weeks ago – sub will give you a notes sheet if you need one. Complete notes while watching movie. The Chemistry of Bioluminescence

5 Bioluminescence – Chemical Equation
Review the reaction – Identify the protein, substrate and products

6 What is the external stimulus that starts the tanning process?
Opening Activity: May 22, 2018 What scientific processes occur to maintain homeostasis in the C. Elegans over time? What is the external stimulus that starts the tanning process? I can… Explain how and why people tan. Homework: Reflection and Vocab – 5/23 Gene Regulation Test 5/24

7 Why do you think skin exposed to sunlight darkens?
Review your idea journal. Create a whiteboard of your current ideas about why we tan.

8 Why do you think skin exposed to sunlight darkens?
Review your idea journal. Create a whiteboard of your current ideas about why we tan. Watch video – add to ideas. Share how unit ideas are involved. Go back to initial ideas.

9 Apply it to tanning When DNA is damaged by UV, a gene called p53 is activated (mechanism unknown) The p53 protein, in turn, activates a gene called POMC POMC causes another molecule to break apart and create MSH (melanin stimulating hormone) This hormone causes the cell to turn tyrosine into melanin In a nutshell – UV damage causes a gene to be activated, which in turn activates melanin production
