Arkansas blocked from carrying out execution
2
Despite a late challenge mounted by Arkansas officials hoping to carry out the state’s first execution in 12 years, the U.S. Supreme Court early Tuesday morning declined to step in, preventing the lethal injection from taking place as scheduled. In a one-sentence order released 15 minutes before the execution warrant expired, the court said that it was denied. No explanation was given and no dissents were recorded. Arkansas and death-row inmates have waged multiple legal battles over whether the state’s planned wave of lethal injections will take place as planned. The fights have centered on an unprecedented flurry of executions that have pushed Arkansas to the forefront of the American death penalty. Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) scheduled what was initially eight executions over an 11-day window, a pace unmatched in the modern era, which he defended as needed because one of the state’s drugs is expiring this month and no replacement could be guaranteed amid an ongoing shortage. Hutchinson acknowledged he was unhappy with the Supreme Court’s decision by saying, “While this has been an exhausting day for all involved, tomorrow we will continue to fight back on last minute appeals and efforts to block justice for the victims’ families.” Typically, three drugs are used in lethal injection. Sodium thiopental or pentobarbital is used as an anesthetic to induce unconsciousness, pancuronium bromide (Pavulon) to cause muscle paralysis and respiratory arrest, and potassium chloride to stop the heart.

Tax returns are due today -- April 18, The best thing someone can do is file the 2016 tax return, or at least file for an automatic six-month extension. If you don't do either, you'll be hit with a failure-to-file penalty. That will amount to 5% of your unpaid taxes for every month that you don't file for up to five months. So that penalty will cap out at 25% of your unpaid taxes. On top of that you'll be subject to a failure-to-pay penalty, which amounts to 0.5% of your unpaid taxes every month, for up to 50 months, for a maximum of 25% of your outstanding balance. You'll also be charged interest on your unpaid taxes starting on April 19. 117-year-old Jamaican Violet-Mosse Brown was recently dubbed the world's oldest human.
