Trade as a weapon Jefferson stops all foreign trade. American ships are forbidden to sail to foreign ports and British goods are banned in U.S. Effects of the Embargo Act Result Make a connection Embargo Act of 1807 Hurt Americans more than British or French Farmers from the south and west had fewer people to purchase goods. Ship owners lost money. Many ship owners ignored the Embargo Congress repealed the Embargo Act. American anger grows toward British

Why was Tecumseh important to history? Native American belief about land Tecumseh defeated by William Henry Harrison Tecumseh flees to Canada War Hawks Believed war was necessary for the protection of sailors and to open up trade Tecumseh wanted to unite the Native Americans against the settlers. Tecumseh felt that agreements btwn settlers and Nat Am were useless as land was for everyone’s use and could not be bought or sold. Battle of New Orleans and its consequences.
Andrew Jackson’s role General who took troops to New Orleans in December 1814 to fight the British. What happened? January 8, 1815 – Jackson’s men routed the British. Jackson becomes a hero Irony of the situation War of 1812 ended December 24, 1814 with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent. Consequences of the War Who won? No clear winner No territory was exchanged Effects of the war British no longer stopped American ships Inspired patriotism/national pride Highlighted regional differences Americans became more self-sufficient encouraged the growth of manufacturing Power of Native Americans broken=westward expansion Regions New England – opposed the war West/South – resented British interference
