Presentation on theme: "Warm-up: Beginning and ends"— Presentation transcript:

1 Title: Fiction 2 Date: 9th January 2013 Objective: To look at the opening of the novel.

2 Warm-up: Beginning and ends
Create two lists in your copy, side by side On one side, list On the other, list important beginnings. important ends. Beginnings Ends First day at a new team Leaving a football club First phone or you first job. Last time seeing a friend Anything you were happy to start Anything you were sad ended

3 Note this down Beginnings and ends are linked in this novel. Examples:
We begin at the end of the story. As the hero starts school, he will be haunted by a particular end. This reflects the mind of the character, who is scared and in trouble.

4 Reading in class We’re going to read from pages 7 (the beginning) to 12 whereby something really important should become apparent. As this is the first time we’re reading, I shall read aloud. Slowly, over the course of the next couple days and weeks, as you become more comfortable with the text, I shall be asking you to read parts too.

5 Important Before we continue into our activities, We’re going to spend 5 minutes in reflection. During this time, please note what you are thinking. Use the sheet to help you. Note what pages we have read Feel free to ask questions about vocabulary also.

6 Post-Reading Activity
“Charlie always knows how it is” (Page 8). Is Charlie a good brother do you think? Use another quote to explain your opinion. “I knew what they did not know, what I could never tell them” (Pg. 9) Tommo is haunted by his fathers death. In the story of the robin and the rose bush(Pages 9-10), he leaves clues as to what may have happened. Find these clues and form a ‘Hypothesis’ (idea) of what happened.

7 Personalisation It is very important that memories are created in this classroom today and every day to come. Our first method shall be ‘associations’. Try and remember your first day in this school, in this class of 29R. What do you remember? How do you think you felt? What do you believe was going through your head? (Writing this down and talking about it shall create a connection between you and Tommo.)

8 Homework Finish that chapter: pages 12-17.
Answer that sheet (either during or after the reading). Spend a couple minutes reflecting too.
