THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE
Great Migration – Hundreds of thousands of African Americans left the South going to the industrial North. New York City’s Harlem neighborhood became the location of African American artistic development, racial pride, sense of community, and political organization. Led to a creative outpouring of African American Arts known as the HARLEM RENAISSANCE.

Claude McKay – Writer who expressed defiance and contempt of racism.

Langston Hughes Became the leading voice of the African American experience in the United States.

Louis Armstrong Introduced JAZZ – A style of music influenced by Dixieland music and ragtime. Great coronet and trumpet soloist. D67lR7Qy_wk

Duke Ellington Famous African American musician who got his start at the Cotton Club.

Bessie Smith Sang about unrequited love, poverty, and oppression.
Classic themes in BLUES style of music. Blues music evolved from African American spirituals.

African American Politics
After World War I, many African Americans wanted a new role in life and in politics. Oscar DePriest was elected the first African American Representative in Congress. African Americans began to vote as a bloc after the Great Migration.

NAACP The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People battled against segregation and discrimination. Anti-lynching legislation was passed in the House of Representatives but defeated in the Senate.

Marcus Garvey Jamaican leader who introduced the idea of “Negro Nationalism” that glorified black culture and traditions. Founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) which promoted black pride and unity. Encouraged education as a way for African Americans to gain economic and political power.

Marcus Garvey Voiced the need for separation an independence from whites. Garvey wanted to create a settlement in Liberia for African Americans to settle. Middle class African Americans distanced themselves from Garvey. Garvey was deported to Jamaica.
