Hooke’s Law
2
Learning objectives Investigate the effect of adding masses to springs
Deduce Hooke’s law regarding the effect of weight on the length of springs Determine the weight of different masses on earth Determine an unknown value from a graph
3
What to do…. Measure the length
4
Results…. Mass (g) Weight (N) Length (mm) Extension (mm) 50 100 150
50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 450 500
5
Plot a graph Decide what goes on the vertical axis
Write a conclusion from the graph Weight (N)
6
Extension! Repeat with a rubber band!
7
Hooke’s Law! Elastic limit is exceeded!
The extension of the spring is PROPORTIONAL to the weight. This means that doubling the weight will double the extension.
