1 Teen Success Ideas to Move Your Mind by Beatrice J. Elye
Slide Show of Significant Excerpts for School/Life Success by Carolyn Harrell Beginning with Chapter 1

2 Chapter 1 Personal Notebooks: A Key Resource
Think content, not form Record ideas, observations, thoughts, concepts Think of something you need to do or that interests you and write it in your notebook now.

3 Focus on your idea. It could be verbal, pictorial, or musical. Describing your concepts is important. Date each entry.

4 For homework tonight, go to the Main Course folder and look in the Infographics and Doodling folder you find there. If you want to use this type of format for some of your notes give it a try. After discovering your five learning styles, temperaments, and talents later on in Appetizers, you may find this style fits your modality. Infographics is also a good way to present information for projects or reports you might have to do.

5 Summary Keep a personal notebook.
Use it to record any ideas that interest you. Include in your notebook creative responses to ideas. Reexamine its content occasionally. p. 3

6 Words of Wisdom pp. 4-5 I do not think that I will ever reach a stage when I will say, “That is what I believe. Finished.” What I believe is alive…and open to growth… -Madeline L’Engle Bring ideas in and entertain them royally, for one of them may be the king. -Mark Van Doren Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions. -Oliver Wendell Holmes Use what language you will, you can never say anything but what you are. -Ralph Waldo Emerson The great art of writing is the art of making people real to themselves with words. -Logan Pearsall Smith In your notebook copy the one you like best.

7 “It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by
“It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by. How else, indeed, to clap the net over the butterfly of the moment? For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the mood is gone; life itself is gone. That is where the writer scores over his fellows: he catches the changes of his mind on the hop.” Vita Sackville-West Read the quote again, think, and do this: Write in your own words what the metaphor is saying and what it has to do with you personally and with your classes at PKY

8 Notebook system in practice
Let’s look beyond the book Alejandra is an organization guru with many other YouTube links. This one, organizing your binder, is rather girly, and she buys a number of items that probably cost a bit, but she is convincing and thorough so it’s worth a look. (18 min.) If you watch, jot down what might work for you. For fun imagine making your own organization YouTube or slide show, or for extra credit, actually do it to share with the class if you want to.

9 What will work for you? Probably not this:

10 We have a semester to break bad habits, make new, good habits or strengthen current good ones.
Knowing how to take good and efficient notes and how to keep notebooks and backpacks organized is a super habit to develop. We will dig in to this more in the main course. For now, dig into your backpack…how are you doing?
