2 History dates back many centuries, possibly in prehistoric times
First record was in Gheel, Belgium in the 9th century Earliest uses were for psychiatric patients  Used in schools and prisons, hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, and outpatient care programs

3 What is pet therapy? Pet therapy uses animals to help people.
Issues include diseases, illness, or health disorders. Pet therapy uses dogs, cats, horses, etc. Animal-assisted activities: enjoyment and pleasure Also used for post-traumatic stress disorder

4 What careers use pet therapy?
Dental Offices/Dental Operations Cancer treatment centers Long-term care facilities Cardiology PTSD facilities Children's Hospitals

5 Advantages Can be used for all ages
Interaction with animals can reduce stress Can improve overall cardiovascular health Bonding is normally easy Can be used for all sorts of issues Many facilities and places that use it

6 Disadvantages Some people have allergies to animals
Have to make sure animals are clean Animal behavior and people behavior Attachment can be an issue
