Presentation on theme: "Heat can affect the Volume of Liquids and Gases"— Presentation transcript:

1 Heat can affect the Volume of Liquids and Gases
Big Idea 1.0 Heat can cause matter to change

2 Thermometers How do they work?
Adding heat to matter (in a thermometer it is alcohol that is dyed red) causes it to expand- i.e the volume increases Removing heat causes it to contract A scale can be made if it is known how much the volume changes

3 F.Y.I Liquid crystals can also be used to determine temperature:
They do this by changing colours according to temperature Are a plasma (have liquid and solid properties) Used in computer screens, wristwatches, calculators, and flat screen televisions Liquid crystals also react to electrical currents, which is how LCD screens work HVLio

4 Activity Growing balloons
Write down your explanation of the experiment What happened to the balloon over the bottle that was surrounded by hot water? By cold water? What happened to the balloon as they sat on the counter after the bottles were taken out of the water? Write a summary what affect heat had on the volume of air? Use the words: volume, expand, contract, heat and gas

5 Discussion: Describe the effect on the volume of a gas when you add and remove heat It is cold and you walk home from the store carrying some balloons that you just bought. They have shrunk and look wrinkled by the time that you get home. Should you go back to the store and demand a refund?

6 1.3 Heat can Affect the Volume of Solids
Do you think that heat can also affect solids in the same way that it affects gas and liquids Wrap- up: Real world examples (write two of them) Old train tracks have small gaps between rails that are many meters apart. Why do you think that they are there? What would happen if they weren’t there? Beverage bottles are not filled all the way to the top. What is the advantage of leaving some space in these bottles? What would happen if the bottles were filled completely?

7 Sidewalks are made with gaps between slabs, why are they there?
Sidewalks are made with gaps between slabs, why are they there? Electrical wires are made with some slack, the wires seem tighter in the winter than in the summer. Why would this be?
