1 Animal Types Arthropods

2 Did You Know??? A pencil thick band of spider web silk could stop a Boeing It is stronger than the material used in bullet proof vests.

3 Characteristics of Arthropods
All Arthropods share the same 4 characteristics: Segmented Bodies Jointed Limbs Exoskeleton Well developed nervous system

4 Segments The segments are broken up into three parts: Head Thorax
Abdomen

5 Characteristics of Arthropods - Segments

6 Jointed Limbs All Arthropods have jointed limbs that allow them to move easier Link

7 Exoskeleton Exoskeleton – A hard external supporting structure
The exoskeleton: 1) protects the arthropod 2) keeps water inside the body

8 Developed Senses Compound Eye – a compound eye is many light sensitive units that work together Most arthropods have compound eyes or for specialized vision or antenna to feel their surroundings

9 Compound Eye

10 Other Specialized Features of an arthropod
The legs of a fly has grips of and claws to hold onto surfaces The mouthparts of a fly has sponge like tissues

11 Centipedes and Millipedes
Mandibles – mouthparts that can pierce and chew food Centipedes and Millipedes have a hard head, mandibles and 1 pair of legs on each segment. Centipedes and Millipedes can have 30 – 354 legs The record is 752

12 The common Millipede The common House Centipede

13 Crustaceans Crustaceans are shrimps, crabs and lobsters
They have gills for breathing, mandibles for eating and 2 compound eyes. Each eye is on an eyestalk

14 This is a lobster found in the New Jersey State Aquarium

15 This is a crab found on the beach in Nags Head North Carolina

16 Coconut Crab The coconut crab is the largest crab in the world

17 The beaches at night in North Carolina are filled with crabs

18

19 Arachnids Instead of compound eyes, arachnids have simple eyes, however they have up to 8 eyes Almost all Spiders are poisonous, however their teeth cannot pierce human skin

20 Insects All insects have three body parts, six legs and 2 antenna
All insects go thorough a metamorphosis change in their lives. Insects live in all places of the world except the ocean

21 The face of a wolf spider
