2 RED SLIDE: These are notes that are very important and should be recorded or highlighted in your science book. You will see an image of a page in your book when it is necessary to highlight! BLACK SLIDE: Pay attention, follow directions, complete projects as described and answer required questions neatly.

6 New Area of Focus: The Muscular System.

7 Movement is carried out by the muscular and skeletal system working together.

8 Muscles turn chemical energy into kinetic energy or the energy of motion.

9 Muscles turn chemical energy into kinetic energy or the energy of motion.

10 Muscles turn chemical energy into kinetic energy or the energy of motion.

11 Muscles turn chemical energy into kinetic energy or the energy of motion.

12 Muscles turn chemical energy into kinetic energy or the energy of motion.

13 Muscles turn chemical energy into kinetic energy or the energy of motion.

14 Muscles pump blood through your body, enable you to breathe, hold you upright, and allow you to move. The Muscular System is mostly made of muscles that allow your body to move and be flexible. Some muscles move material around inside your body Motion Pg. 22

27 Upon stimulation by an action potential from your brain and nerves,

28 Upon stimulation by an action potential from your brain and nerves, skeletal muscles perform a coordinated contraction by shortening.

30 Muscle is the tissue that contracts and relaxes, making movement possible
Pg. 22

31 Your body has 3 kinds of muscle tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
Pg. 22

32 Smooth Muscle Found in internal organs
Pg. 22 Smooth Muscle Found in internal organs Helps move material through the body Found in blood vessels to help move blood Found in digestive system to help move food Smooth muscle is involuntary Spindle shaped

33 Cardiac Muscle Tissue that makes up the heart
Pg. 23 Cardiac Muscle Tissue that makes up the heart Contains lots of mitochondria to supply energy to the cells Do not stop moving your entire lifetime! Push blood out of the heart and pump it around the body Long, thin, and branched Involuntary

34 Skeletal Muscle Attached to your bones and allows you to move
Pg. 23 Skeletal Muscle Attached to your bones and allows you to move You have control over these muscles (voluntary) Most work in pairs: as one contracts, the other relaxes to allow movement

35 An example would be the contraction of the biceps and a relaxation of the triceps.

59 Muscle can also be voluntary and involuntary.
Voluntary muscles you can control. Involuntary muscles are ones that you can’t control.

60 Muscle can also be voluntary and involuntary.
You are able to control the movement of skeletal muscle, so it is called voluntary muscle You are not able to control the movement of smooth and cardiac muscle, so they are called involuntary muscles.

76 Activity! Pupil Dilation
Turn the lights off and shut the blinds for a few minutes. Find a partner and look into their eyes. Turn on the lights and watch the pupils dilate. This is contraction occurs all of the time without you having to really think about it.
