Figure 1 Roles for Hypothalamic Glia in the Control of Energy Balance and Leptin Action Previous work has suggested that the tanycytes that line the base of the hypothalamic third ventricle (3V) and interact with vessels as part of the blood-brain barrier control the permeability of the barrier and leptin access to the ARC. Also, obesity is associated with increased numbers of activated microglia and astrocytes, which are theorized to contribute to obesity pathogenesis. Now, Kokoeva and colleagues have shown that NG2-glia in the median eminence associate with and are required for the maintenance of the median eminence-projecting dendrites of ARC LepRb neurons, and for the sensing of leptin by these cells, as well as for the control of energy balance by leptin (Djogo et al., 2016).
