1 CD8+ T Cells and cART: A Dynamic Duo?

2 Figure 1 Dynamic Changes in Plasma Viremia with cART Initiation and CD8+ T Cell Depletion Rhesus macaques were infected with SIV and initiated and maintained on cART (blue shading) beginning 8 weeks later. Therapy was maintained for an additional 8–32 weeks prior to the administration of a CD8-depleting antibody. Suppression of the viremia was variable, which the authors designated as “persistent” (n = 7), “intermittent” (n = 5), or no (n = 1) suppression. CD8+ T cell depletion coincided with a detectable rebound in plasma viremia, and the level of viral rebound was associated with the degree of pre-depletion suppression of plasma viremia. The question that remains is whether CD8+ T cell depletion would lead to a similar rise in viremia during long-term cART (green dashed line), when plasma virus levels are durably and more completely suppressed.
