1 Care Worth Wanting: Responsible Robotics in Healthcare
Aimee van Wynsberghe | November | Care Summit

2 The seed of an idea

3 1, 800,000* * Statistics Netherlands
Around 2050, the economic costs of having a population bulge will really begin to bite. Over 1,8 million people, 10 percent of the population, will be 80 or older. The Netherlands will have to boost spending on healthcare, care services and pensions to cope with the pressure. * Statistics Netherlands

4 What are healthcare robots?

5 Robots in Care

8 ? What is ethics?

9 Ethics 101 Ethics is about living the good life: what is it and how does one achieve it? Private versus public dimension Values like happiness, justice, privacy, security, wellbeing…

10 Ethical Issues Fundamental Robot Responsibility Accountability
Autonomy Well-being Environment Applied Informed Consent Privacy Safety and Security Data ownership

11 What can we do about the ethical issues of robots?

12 Care Centered Value Sensitive Design

13 What is it? How does it work?
Framework for incorporating ethics into the design and implementation of care robots Intended to help both retrospectively and prospectively: robot designers Ethicists

14 The CCVSD Framework: Context
The Home The CCVSD Framework: Context Nursing Home Privacy in home vs nursing home, data vs body Hospital

15 The CCVSD Framework: Practice
Feeding The CCVSD Framework: Practice Lifting Bathing

16 Example: The Practice of Lifting

17 Practice of Lifting prior to the robot

18 Practice of lifting with a robot

19 Practice of lifting with a robot

20 What kind of care do we want to provide…?
Context Dependent

21 Robots in Care Say that this approach is not just about retro but can be used for all the robots that are in development right now but also for the robots of the future; use this approach to begin thinking about how a robot will provide the greatest benefit without risking too much

22 But there’s still a gap between academia and industry…
My approach zooms out to look at the practice with a greater amount of detail, rather than just the mechanical process of lifting it becomes a part of the overall care of a person, but it is important to note that I am presenting one portion of the analysis there is still more to this. We need to zoom out once again to show how this is one part of the oerall life cycel of the robot, we can create a wonderful design but if it’s not implemented or the policy to regulate it isn’t appropriate we not accomplish our task of good care. Not only do we need a good framework for the design but we need incentives given by law, policy makers, and hospital developers… we need all of these stars aligened to really be able to say that we’re doing responsible robotics in healthcare

23 Policy Implementation Education
Should align with the goal of incorporating ethics into the design of robots Implementation A good robot can be implemented poorly Not only do we need a good framework for the design but we need incentives given by law, policy makers, and hospital developers… we need all of these stars aligened to really be able to say that we’re doing responsible robotics in healthcare Education Hospital administrators, doctors, nurses, and the public must be informed

24

25 In Conclusion Robots can and will provide an incredible aid to the needs of healthcare workers and elderly persons in the home IF done responsibly CCVSD to protect values, the good life, in design and development

26 Ensuring that policy includes ethical considerations
