1 “John Boehner Resigns”

2 House Speaker John Boehner (Rep
House Speaker John Boehner (Rep.) on Friday resigned from his leadership position in the House of Representatives (Speaker of the House). Boehner was ready to announce his resignation this November. But Friday, one day after the emotional, historic visit by Pope Francis to Capitol Hill, Boehner found his new moment. "I decided today is the day I'm going to do this, simple as that," Boehner said at a Capitol Hill press conference, saying his decision came after a night of sleep and prayers. The decision marked the end of a wild six-year tenure leading the fractured Republican group, a time marked by repeated clashes with the White House, and failed deal-makings with President Barack Obama. Boehner was elevated to the speakership thanks to the power of tea party candidates in 2010 and then limited by what he could accomplish because of them. The timing may have been right for Boehner -- but it stunned the House GOP Conference Friday morning. Boehner made the announcement -- and choked up. Others did too. The decision of who will replace Boehner now puts pressure on conservatives in the House to try to find a consensus candidate moving forward.

3 In Other News Paul Walker's daughter has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Porsche, claiming the sports car he was riding in had multiple design flaws. The suit, filed Monday on behalf of 16-year-old Meadow Rain Walker, seeks unspecified damages for defects it alleges contributed to her father's death. A former prison worker who helped two convicted murders escape from a maximum-security prison in upstate New York was sentenced Monday to up to seven years behind bars. Under the terms of a plea deal, Joyce Mitchell, 51, faces a minimum sentence of 2 years and 4 months in prison. She pleaded guilty to charges stemming from her role in providing convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat with tools such as hacksaws, drill bits and lighted eyeglasses ahead of their June 6 prison break. "This is by far the worst mistake I have ever made in my life." Mitchell told the judge as she wept in the courtroom. "I live with regret every day and will for the rest of my life." This shouldn't be possible. Researchers say they've detected a supermassive black hole at the center of a newly found galaxy that's far bigger than current theories allow. The galaxy, with the very clunky name of SAGE0536AGN, was discovered by NASA. Scientists think it's about 9 billion years old. Scientists aren't sure whether SAGE0536AGN is just a fluke or whether they've found a new class of galaxies.
