Fig. 1 The epithelium produces cytokines that can recruit and activate inflammatory cells. The epithelium responds to a range of stimuli by producing chemoattractant cytokines, such as IL-8, eotaxin, and RANTES, that can recruit inflammatory cells to the airways.
