1 Carmel Valley Middle School 8th Grade Registration 2019-2020

2 Registration Information for 8th Grade
 You will be selecting: PE Elective Before you begin to fill it out, read the instructions on the contract. It is a contract because your signature will indicate that you understand it and that you will abide by it. Step 1: The 8th Grade Course Selection Form must be completed and is due to your science teacher or the counseling office by Monday March 25th. Step 2: Log into your PARENT Aeries Portal account. You will also select your courses ONLINE! The online registration window will be open on March 18th and will close on March 25th. All students will be automatically enrolled in US History, Science 8, and the next math/English course

3 Math Planning Math Planning Recommendations
Course Course Integrated Math B Essentials Integrated Math A Essentials Integrated Math B (Bridge Required) With grade of ‘A’ in IMAE, your teacher may suggest that you enroll in the mandatory summer bridge (pass/fail) & enrollment in IMB in 8th grade. With grade of B or C in IMAE, IMBE is recommended but with teacher/counselor/family consultation, students are eligible to take the mandatory summer bridge With grade of D or F in IMAE, you will be enrolled in IMBE

4 Math Planning Recommendations
Course Course Integrated Math B Integrated Math A Integrated Math B Honors With grade of ‘A’ in IMA, we recommend consultation with IMA teacher for either IMB or IMBH Any student wanting to move from IMA to IMBH is strongly recommended to complete the optional independent study summer bridge. With B or C we recommend IMB With grade of D or F in IMA, student will automatically be placed in IMB Readiness

Course Course Integrated Math B Honors Integrated Math 1 Honors With F grade in IMBH, mandatory repeat of IMBH

7 English Options Students currently in Honors English 7 will continue in Honors English 8 as long as they earn B’s or better both semesters and have mastered all of the 7th grade English standards. Talk with your teacher about level next year if you are earning a C. Remember, you want to enroll in an English class that will give you the correct level of support. This will enable you to experience academic success and enjoy the subject.

ISPE (On-line application required: Window opens April 15th and closes May 31st- (NO EXCEPTIONS) Window will NOT reopen at semester

9 We recommend you begin your world language no later than 9th grade.
In 9th grade, additional choices of Chinese, Japanese, and American Sign Language may be available. Not all languages are offered at all high schools Choices of world languages for grade 8 are Spanish 1 or 2, French 1 You should have a good grasp of all concepts taught in Spanish 1 before moving on to Spanish 2- repeating is OK Language courses are high school level, college prep courses

10 The ISPE Application is required and due no later than May 31st, 2019
Band/Orchestra If you wish to be in Band or Orchestra and are not currently in the program, please download and return the music intent form online. If you are currently in the music program, your teacher will determine your level. You may choose to do PE and have Band/Orchestra be your only elective. Or, you may exercise your option as a music/ISPE student for a second elective. The ISPE Application is required and due no later than May 31st, 2019

11 Intro to Film Studies Do you like movies?
Intro to Film Studies will look at all elements of films including: direction, location, characters, script and special effects. Analysis of film elements will study: Plot/action and how it moves the movie forward Interaction between film elements (how does the setting impact the characters?) Theme from the script and director How does the form or structure contribute to its meaning? How does a film stay true to the original text? Do you like movies? You will have the opportunity to watch movies of all genres and analyze the different elements of films.

12 Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing
An elective class for those students who enjoy recreational reading and creative writing Students will read different genres using both self-selected books and group reads Students will edit, share and discuss their own creative writing pieces Publishing via writing contests and the CVMS literary magazine Guest speakers will come and present to the class

13 Courses Requiring Applications TV Broadcasting/Journalism
The following courses require applications which are available on-line in the “optional forms” section of the Registration Forms page. Leadership TV Broadcasting/Journalism Yearbook Adapted PE Aide College Readiness Please complete your portion of the application and give it to a teacher if a confidential recommendation is needed.

14 Choose Wisely Choose Wisely We are scheduling for the whole year.
Schedule changes will not be made to accommodate teacher requests, period requests, or extracurricular and athletic activities. SDUHSD Board Policy sets a four-week limit at the beginning of each semester to drop a class. Level changes (from honors to college prep) may be requested during this four-week period if there is space available.

Course Selection Form Course Registration Contract Read the Contract and Instructions thoroughly. Course selections will not be officially recognized without a parent/guardian signature on the contract. You must choose your courses online through your PARENT account prior to turning in your Course Selection Form. March 25th is the last day to submit initial elective course selections online. June 13th is the last day to make schedule changes with your counselor.

16 Online Selection Your PARENT must have an active Aeries account (see Mrs. Tracy in counseling immediately if you do not!) Window to submit is March 18th - March 25th (window closes at 11:59pm) Refer to Course Selection Form for course offerings

18 3. Choose “Show All Courses”
4. Click on Search 5. A new screen will appear showing all courses offered Start by clickig “Add New” A new screen will appear showing all the elective, PE, Math and English courses offered at CVMS. Step 3: Choose ‘Show All Courses’ Step 5: A new screen will appear showing all courses offered at CVMS Step 4: Click on “Search”

19 6. Select your courses by clicking on the course titles for *PE
*1st Choice Elective Only (not alternates) As you select your courses, they will appear here

20 7. Make sure you select all of the classes you wish to take and check titles. Do NOT add alternates.
Check Titles. To remove a course, the red “x” button will remove the request

21 Courses are Tentative List your 6 choices in order of preference on your Course Selection Form. If you apply for Adapted PE Aide, check Adapted PE Aide on the Course Selection form, and sign up for General PE online. Counselors will change your schedule once your application is approved. Course selections will not be officially recognized without a parent/guardian signature on the contract. 22 Remember... Your Course Registration Contracts are due on Monday 25th
to your science teacher or the counseling office. Make sure you have selected your elective choices online prior to this day. See your counselor if you have any questions!
