3 WWII Begins September 3, 1939 – WWII began
Japan, Italy and Germany began taking over other countries Britain and France had enough and declared war on Germany The United States chose to remain neutral concerning these events.

4 The US Enters WWII Japan bombed Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor was an American naval base in the Hawaiian Islands In less than 2 hours, most of the US fleet was sunk or burning At a nearby airfield, 300 planes damaged or destroyed Almost 4,000 people were killed or wounded

5 The US enters WWII Congress declared war on Japan the same day
Axis Powers – Germany, Japan, Italy Allied Powers – US, Britain, Soviet Union, France

6 Americans at War WWII ended the Great Depression in the US
The production of war supplies in the US gave many people jobs. Women took over many jobs the men had left behind. Millions of volunteers helped protect the nation’s borders by working for the Office of Civilian Defense.

7 Americans at War Federal government grew
The government took control of many businesses It set prices and wages It did this to produce war supplies and feed thousands of soldiers It implemented rationing (limiting)

8 Problems for Japanese Americans
President ordered 110,000 Japanese Americans in relocation camps. (like prisons, had barbed wire and guards) US officials believed Japanese Americans would help Japan invade the US They had to sell their homes, businesses, and belongings Japanese Americans still served in the US Army
