2. Training Objective
To familiarize parents with the changes in the California State Math Standards.
To give parents insight into the activities happening in the classroom.
To help parents understand how they can support the learning at home.

3. What is the Common Core?
The Common Core Standards are a progression of clear, consistent learning expectations in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
While most states already have ELA and math standards, they vary widely in their coverage and level of rigor.
Aligned with college and work expectations.
Are clear, concise and understandable.
Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills.
Builld on strengths and lessons of current standards.

5. Why Common Core? The Math Common Core State Standards:
Promote mathematical reasoning.
Depth over breadth
Apply math instead of completing the math.
Create mathematicians.

6. Encourage independence
Read nonfiction books with your children. Find ways to make reading fun and exciting. Don’t forget to let them see you reading different things, as well. Point out when you read instructions, recipes…..
Provide some challenging texts for your kids. Show them how to dig deeper into more difficult pieces.
Encourage writing at home. Write together using evidence and details.
Read often to young children, babies and toddlers.
Ask them for reasons for their choices, Why this restaurant over another?

7. What’s Different in Mathematics?
Work more deeply in fewer topics
Keep building on learning starting with a strong foundation
Students will be asked to talk about and prove their understanding
Students will be asked to use math in real-world situations
Standards for all grade levels can be reassessed in any grade
Still need to memorize math facts
Different grade level standards require fluency in specific standards
No longer all about procedure
Still procedural but focus in on conceptual

9. What does math look like in school?
Larger emphasis on problem solving with real- world situations.
Students will need to justify their work/answers.
Assignments will build on one another.
Give carefully formulated explanations to each other.
More writing will be expected.
Use of variety of mathematical tools (ruler, protractor, manipulatives)
Number talk

10. How can you help your child in math?
Help children practice and memorize their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
Encourage the use of appropriate math vocabulary.
Encourage children not to give up while solving problems, to build stamina and develop their critical thinking skills. Don’t give them the answers- ask them to think of different ways they can solve the problem.
Monitor your child’s use of appropriate technology. Use technology for learning.

11. What can parents do at home?
Have children apply their math knowledge to a real-world scenario at home, such as budgeting for something they want or calculating distances between places.
Have children illustrate the math they were thinking in their head and discuss it.
Know what concepts are important for your child based on their grade level and spend time working on those concepts.
Encourage diverse ways of solving a problem.
Be aware of what concepts your child struggled with last year or is struggling with and support your child in those challenge areas moving forward.
Provide time every day for yur child to work on math at home. If no time at home work on math concepts in the car. Play guess my number games. Make up word problems for real situations. Help them practice “mental math”.
Help your child know and memorize basic math facts.
