1
THE FARTHEST ROCKET FROM THE LAUNCH PAD

WHICH MIXTURE WILL TRAVEL THE FARTHEST ROCKET FROM THE LAUNCH PAD?
3
BACKGROUND The reason I chose to do this experiment is one day in class Mr.Gorden did an experiment to see which kind of soda works best when reacted with mentos. After the experiment we found out that 7up works better than diet coke, so thats why I used 7up and mentos instead of diet coke and mentos. The reason I used baking-soda and vinegar is one day we did a lab to see what brand of baking-soda reacted best with vinegar, and that got me thinking which mixture will make the best rocket. I chose the plain 7up because I needed a base line to go off.

HYPOTHESIS My hypothesis is if I use mentos and 7 up then it will make the farthest distance from the launch pad

INDEPENDENT: The mixtures DEPENDENT: The distance from the launch pad
VARIABLES INDEPENDENT: The mixtures DEPENDENT: The distance from the launch pad CONSTANTS: The bottle, the amount of liquid in the bottle and the way I set the mixtures off

PROCEDURE (1.) Get all my materials. (2.) Make the mixtures.
(3.) Wait 30 seconds then set the rockets off (by throwing the bottle at the ground cap first) (4.) Record my data by measuring the rockets distance from the launch pad. (5.)Repeat steps 1.-4.

CONCLUSION What mixture out of mentos and 7up, baking soda and vinegar, and regular 7up shook up would make the rocket travel farthest from the launch pad? What I did first was put the mixtures in the same size bottle then set them off. The mentos and 7 up went the farthest from the launch pad at 70 inches away, and in second place was baking soda and vinegar going 65 inches from the launch pad, and regular 7 up went 45 inches. My data supports my hypothesis because I said in my hypothesis that mentos and 7 up would go the farthest from the launch pad and it did.

When the caps explode of the bottle, the bottle would go crazy because of all the pressure that was being released. One problem I had, was when I made the mixtures I held them for more than 30 secounds, and the bottle would explode in my hands.
