1 Pygmalion Act III Kyle Grant, Stacey Trejo, Caleb Carabajal, Claudia Cabrera, Julie Arvizu

2 Characters: Henry Higgins
Higgins treats everybody in the same manner: Rude, judgemental Creates assumptions based on someone’s appearance & dialect Speaks provocatively to those he sees as inferior, objectifies Eliza Condemns others for speaking poorly, yet he speaks poorly too; hypocritical Examples portraying characterization of Higgins: “Pickering: shall we ask this baggage to sit down, or shall we throw her out of the window” (18). “Take all her clothes off and burn them. Ring up Whitely or somebody for new ones. Wrap her up in brown paper til they come” (21). “I walk over everybody” (21).

3 Mrs. Higgins Examples of charactertization of Mrs. Higgins:
“You offend all my friends: they stop coming whenever they meet you” (43). “I can’t get around your vowels: and though I like to get pretty postcards in your patent shorthand, I always have to read the copies in ordinary writing” (43) “You silly boy, of course she’s not presentable. She’s a triumph of your art and of her dressmaker’s; but if you suppose for a moment that she doesn’t give herself away in every sentence she utters, you must be perfectly cracked about her”(52).

4 Scene pg 51-55 Mrs. Higgins has invited guests Miss and Mrs. Eynsford Hill to enjoy each other's company, however Mr. Higgins has invited Eliza and Colonel Pickering to his mother's house. This interaction occurs after Miss and Mrs. Eynsford as well as Eliza leave Mrs. Higgins house...

5 Question 1: A playwright has many tools at hand for developing character. In the development of a minor character in Pygmalion, show one of these conventions has been used to make the character memorable in spite of being minor. In Act 3, Mrs. Higgins’ characterization is developed through the dialogue that is had between her son and her. It is made clear that their mother and son relationship is not typical, as she avoids spending time with her own son, questioning his presence when he arrives at her house. Although she is a minor character, Mrs. Higgins is a representation of a voice of reason, questioning Higgins actions toward Eliza, how he is attempting to change her on the outside, yet it is impossible to change her on the inside; her true character, and Mrs. Higgins explicitly points this out, criticizing the thought process of her son who believes he can transform this woman. Mrs. Higgins, seems to be a woman who cannot be fooled nor deceived, she also speaks very properly and condemns HIggins for acting like common people, she is a character that gives the audience insight about the perspective of the higher class.
