1 Sarah Sejahtera Young People Cornwall My role: To Embed Youth Participation into Commissioned CYP Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing Services in Cornwall. Involving young people in developing, improving and celebrating mental health services. Young Volunteers Milda Ambraževičiūtė, Sophie Blake, Jonty Kennedy, and Isabel Murray

2 Who gets involved We have two youth boards 1.SPEAK UP CORNWALL
2. SOWENNA YP BOARD Young people involved range in age from 14 – 21 years. 30 young people have volunteered their time on improving mental health services for Young People Cornwall (DURING ) Between them they volunteered 858 hours. YOUNG PEOPLE TRAVEL FROM PLYMOUTH TO PENZANCE AND ALL AREAS IN BETWEEN TO COME TO THE GROUP

3 Why we do it We get involved because:
We want to improve mental health services for future generations of young people We want young people to have their say and be involved in planning, delivery and evaluation of mental health services, so that young people are at the heart of all services We want to make things better for others and us It’s fun and provides great opportunities Why we do it

4 WEBSITE DENZEL CAMPAIGN MY HEALTH AND WELLBEING MAP SOWENNA YP BOARD OUR WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY CAMPAIGN What we do The young people we work have lots of opportunities to have their say, including delivering workshops at conferences, training professionals, accessing training for themselves, sitting on strategic boards, running health campaigns, make films, create resources, interviewing staff, being involved in commissioning services, developing services and assessing services. Today we want to tell you more about:

5 WEBSITE We have created a website for young people with mental health problems in Cornwall by young people with mental health problems

6 DENZEL 5 WAYS TO WELLBEING HEALTH CAMPAIGN
Based on a pet which belonged to two of our group members – young people felt pets don’t judge The packs also have stickers, a badge and a worksheet for young people to create a bespoke 5 ways to wellbeing plan for themselves Piloted - We will go through the evaluation results at our next Speak Up Cornwall meeting at the end of October Make any changes needed & create posters Launch the campaign across Cornwall

7 My Health and Wellbeing Map
We made this to stop young people having to keep telling their stories to every agency they work with. Young people will fill these in with a professional and then they will hold their own information which will travel across services with them. Once completed they can be sent to organisations before meetings, but MUST BE READ BY PROFESSIONALS. We have been developing this for over a year working with a local designer to make our ideas a reality We’ve called it ‘My Health and Wellbeing Map’ instead of the mental health passport We have completed an internal pilot at YPC and then made changes based on feedback from yp Mind and Body are just about to start the external pilot of the map. Then we will review the evaluation and make the final changes. Then it will be launched across Cornwall, we’ve already been approached by agencies wanting to use the maps – e.g. CAMHS and Sowenna- the new inpatient unit

8 Sowenna YP Board Set up in Summer 2017
YP have been working alongside Rob Burgess, Liz Myers & Laura Bunday (two of which were interviewed by our young people) to shape the new service Involved in developing the welcome pack for yp and families – ongoing The group chose the name of the unit Involved in developing the building design & interior design of the unit Involved in how the unit will operate e.g. staffing, rules, expectations etc Interviewed staff for Sowenna Involved in the Inpatient Unit procurement interviews for the site builders Designed the logo for the Sowenna appeal Turf cutting event Will develop virtual reality room with Falmouth University & due to make a film about Sowenna

9 Our World Mental Health Day (10th October - tomorrow) Campaign
For World Mental Health Day we (Speak Up Cornwall) have decided to promote the positive mental health and the positivity everyone strives to feel and embrace throughout their lives. Happiness is such a vital aspect for young people, members of our community and everyone’s lives, as it prevents negativity which is to be avoided. We are promoting #worldwidesmile and ask that you share a memory or place or anything which makes you smile in order to spread the happiness and create a world wide smile for World Mental Health Day. By SHG. Please support our campaign by 1.Posting on any social media platform a picture of what makes you happy with the hashtag #worldwidesmile and tag so we can share it 2. Sharing the 5 films made by young people which can be found on you tube under #worldwidesmile, on the Young People Cornwall’s (YPC) facebook page, on YPC twitter account ypcmakingwaves and it is going on Instagram too

10 Benefits of ‘having a say’ to group members
When I feel ill, I really get involved and it takes my mind off my illness and enables me to cope. YP aged 19 I’ve done training, I’ve sat on interview panels and done loads more. I can’t believe what I have to say counts. YP aged 17 I’ve made friends that know how I feel, they’re not like my other friends who I know through gaming. YP (male) aged 21 I’ve managed to overcome my anxiety and come to the group, I know everyone will understand if I have a panic attack which makes it easier. If I ‘m really ill, I find it hard to go to things, but I know if I come along to the group, I can get support and help to manage. My involvement has helped me move onto a youth work apprenticeship. YP (male) aged 20 When I was on the ward in Kent, I never thought I’d get the chance to be involved in developing the new children and young people’s inpatient unit in Cornwall. Thank you. YP aged 19 (taken from consultation with group members – March 2018)
