4 Decision Making The ability to consider possible solutions and select the one that is best suited to one’s individual needs while also considering how one’s decision affects oneself and others. Decision making helps students carefully weigh all possible options in order to reach a desired outcome Activities IGP, IEP, Parent Teacher Conference participation Career choices, extracurricular activities, Teaching art of questioning, avoiding fads/group pressure Escape Curriculum (DD and Now)

5 Problem-Solving Skills
The ability to effectively respond to and generate solutions for challenging situations that arise. increased competence and independence in school and the community. Activities: The “IDEAL” problem solver: (Wehmeyer et al., 2007) I = Identify problems and opportunities D = Define goals E = Explore possible strategies A = Anticipate outcomes and act L = Look back and learn model

6 Goal-Setting and Attainment
Identifying an objective to achieve and developing a plan to reach that goal. Students will have goals throughout their lives, beyond school Activities Set daily, weekly, monthly goals Related to academic achievement, social desires, daily tasks, behavior management Create roadmaps Paths and MAPS (Person Centered Planning) PATHS: others support the person to share their dreams for the future and set targets to get there MAPS (Making Action Plans):  listening to a person's dreams, acknowledging their nightmares, building a portrait of their gifts and talents, focus on simple daily actions toward goal  Center for Leadership in Disability: centered-planning/

7 Self-Advocacy Knowing and standing up for one’s rights, communicating effectively and assertively, and being an effective leader or team member. Voices are hear and they are respected. Leadership skills are developed. Activities: Encourage students to express their opinions and thoughts Support autonomy Teach effective communication (assertive vs aggressive) Debate issues; challenge answers Discuss IDEA, ADA

8 Self-Regulation Monitoring and evaluating one’s own behavior, selecting and providing one’s own reinforcement, setting a schedule, and self directed learning through strategies like self-instruction (verbalizing thoughts to monitor the cognitive process of an individual, or in this case, activate the performance of a task) Self-control, pacing, monitoring, structuring time Activities: Journaling (self-reflection, self-evaluation) BIP development Monitoring on-task behavior Self-monitoring sheets (goal attainment) Countoons ( )

9 Self-Awareness Accurately identifying one’s own strengths and limitations, identifying one’s preferences, interests, and abilities, and applying that knowledge to enhance success. Knowledge of abilities develops inner strength Activities: Surveys, checklists, assessments Multiple intelligence surveys Write autobiography Awareness of disability and the accomplishments of others
