Activator List three things that you have learned during our chemistry unit (since the beginning of the year). List three things that you remember learning about, but didn’t understand or want more help with. Get your folders and find your periodic table sheet, you’ll need it today!

Activator Get out sheets from yesterday. Make sure the problem on the back (density of 4 cubes) is complete so that we can grade each other’s work. Trade papers. Using the rubric, grade your partners work on a scale of 1-4 for each category. Identify the important information Come up with a plan Execute the plan Double check your work

Review Day 1 October 4, 2017

Laptops Today’s lesson is on the laptops. We need to get them quickly and quietly. Make sure that you put your laptop in the correct place when you are finished and that it is plugged in to charge. When you get your laptop, go to nearpod.com and type in the code that you see on the board.

Objective SWBAT: score an 80% or better on their chemistry unit test next week

Review Topic 1 - Periodic Table

Periodic Table The Atomic Number – or the number of protons (and electrons) that one atom of that element has The Chemical Symbol – usually only one or two letters, and that is how the element is abbreviated The Atomic Mass – almost always a decimal because it is an average atomic mass for one atom of that element Element Name

Periodic Table The columns (vertical/up and down) are called groups or families. The rows (horizontal/side to side) are called periods. Finally, all elements are listed in order by their atomic number. Elements that are located near each other on the table (for example, in the same group or period) have similar properties and most likely react the same way in experiments.

Review Topic 2 - Pure Substances
A pure substance is something that cannot be broken down physically. This means that we can’t physically separate (or pull apart) the pieces of pure substance. Pure substances are things such as elements and compounds.

Elements An element is a pure substance, meaning it cannot be broken down into simpler substances. Elements are made of only one type of atom. Examples of elements are oxygen (O), gold (Au), aluminum (Al), helium (He), hydrogen (H), sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl), and carbon (C) (all found on the Periodic Table).

Compounds A compound is a pure substance composed of two or more different elements chemically bonded together. Examples of compounds are water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), sugar (C6H12O6) and salt (NaCl).

Review Topic 3 - Mixtures
Mixtures are substances made by mixing other substances together that are not chemically combined, only physically combined The substances in a mixture can be separated using physical methods such as filtration, freezing, and distillation.

Homogeneous Mixtures Homogeneous Mixtures are uniform throughout, or have a consistent appearance. These are also known as solutions, when one substance has dissolved in another. Examples: salt water, Kool-Aid, air, and metal alloys such as bronze and steel

Heterogeneous Mixtures
Heterogeneous Mixtures are not uniform throughout and you can see the different parts. These types of mixtures can be known as colloids and suspensions. Examples: Trail mix, salad, cinnamon- sugar, chicken noodle soup

Partner Work Complete the rest of your handout. You can work as an individual or with a single partner. However if you are not focused and not doing work, then I will instruct you to work by yourself.

Homework Complete any classwork that you did not finish in class 3-2-1 Three things you learned today (or re-learned) Two things you still have questions about One opinion you now have Exit Ticket
