National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), founded in 1947, restricted membership to peoples of “Indian ancestry” In 1961, Native Americans met in Chicago and pressured the NCAI to push JFK for rights, the NCAI did not The more radical National Indian Youth Council was formed as a result NIYC wanted to go back to true Native American tradition

Red Power Movement In the late 1960s, a group of Native American activists rejected negotiation and compromise Their most significant moment=the occupation of Alcatraz on and off for two years The protest gained national attention for Native American civil rights
