The idea that colonial discourses continue to inform contemporary attitudes to race and ethnicity in the postcolonial era. The idea that civilizationism constructs racial hierarchies and sets up binary oppositions based on notions of otherness.

Beyonce’s dancer form the shape of the confederate flag. This was a flag used by the confederate states which fought to maintain slavery in the USA. For example states like Alabama and Louisiana. The music video challenges Gilroy's theory by once again showing black dancers forming a flag that once oppressed them. Beyonce saying “My daddy Alabama, momma louisiana.” connotes her rising against the hierarchy.
