1 Film & TV Writing Week 1

2 Wednesday 8/17 Bell Ringer:
Pick up a syllabus and read through it. Write down any questions you have on a Post-It note and place it on your desk. Grab 3-4 Post-It notes and answer the questions on the large posters around the room. Lastly, find your assigned seat (seating chart on podium).

5 Requirements: The Lovely Bones
We will be reading The Lovely Bones to begin our adventure in writing scripts. Along the way we will stop to explore how characters are developed, how the plot is formed, and other ways the film is created. Some chapters will be experienced in the classroom, while some chapters will be enjoyed from the comfort of your home. We will also have reading quizzes

6 Requirements: The Lovely Bones Script
After reading the book and digging into the Seven Elements of Good Storytelling, we will begin looking at the script that was written. We will analyze how the script was created and produced (yes, we will watch the movie.

7 Requirements: Analysis Paper
You will write a paper after reading the book/script and watching the movie. You will compare and contrast the book to the movie and give reasons as to why certain scenes were altered, deleted, or added. You will also talk about how cinema techniques added to the movie. There will be a rubric and Help Sheet for this assignment

8 Requirements: TV Scripts
We will look at how TV scripts are written and produced as well. Shows such as Chuck, Criminal Minds, and Castle will be the start of our TV study

9 Requirements: Script Writing
After you learn how to write a script, you will create one based on a book you choose next semester. Rubrics will be provided and I will guide you through You will have: A Character sketch A plot diagram Conflict sketch And other supplements to help guide your writing

10 Tests, Quizzes, 10x10s, Midterm, Final
There will be reading quizzes along the way (these will be in the form of 10x10s) There will be at least three tests 1 Over the Seven Rules of Story Telling 1 over cinematic techniques 1 over script format and writing Your midterm will be over everything you have learned this semester Keep your notes organized Your Final will be the script you write

Keep tabs on the website. There are always tips, tricks, and hints to help you out. I will try to update it as often as I can with the Weekly Agendas (quizzes and tests will be posted there!! *HINT!) There is a PDF of the book on the website (which means you can read it from home if you forget your book!) Questions?

13 Getting to know you Each person will get an card.
Find people with the same number as you. Come up with at least 2 things you all have in common. Find people who have the same suite as you. Come up with three things you all have in common. Find people who have the same color as you.

15 Thursday Bell Ringer In a short paragraph, explain what you did this summer. Did you read any books? Which ones? Did you go see any movies?
