3 Exam Overview AP English Language & Composition
60 minute multiple-choice section consisting of questions responding to passages reflecting a range of voices from the past 500 years 135 minute essay section consisting of 3 prompts: synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argument 57.4% of 2018 test takers (600K) scored 3 or higher Instructional focus on rhetoric

4 Exam Overview AP English Literature & Composition
60 minute multiple-choice section consisting of questions responding to prose and poetry selections reflecting a range of voices from the past 500 years 120 minute essay section consisting of 3 prompts: poetry analysis, prose analysis, and free response 47.4% --a 6.4% drop from 52.8% in 2017!--test takers (400K+) scored 3 or higher in 2018 Instructional focus on Instructional focus on poetics (mimesis & drama)

5 Skills Assessed* The ability to articulate a clear and defensible claim that answers the prompt The ability to select effective support and to provide insightful, sustained analysis The ability to write with clarity and sophistication *within an incredibly daunting time limit!

6 PSAT* (juniors only)& Mock Exam Schedule
October 10th (Wednesday)* October 20th (Saturday) February 2nd (Saturday) April 6th (Saturday) Please note: deadline for PSAT registration & payment ($16) is Friday, September 28th . Students receiving free or reduced price lunch are eligible for a fee waiver.

9 Grading Standards All AP English course grading is aligned with the AP College Board rubric All grades a derived from past AP College Board standards that have been tested and proven accurate over decades The grades/scores reflect student skills and provide insight to further refine and improve student performance

10 Time Demands Students need to set aside time to read, reflect and write There are texts to read – in and outside the classroom There are papers/essays to write – in and outside the classroom There is research to be completed - in and outside the classroom Tutoring (Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.)
