5 Distillation In pairs list 5-10 key words/concepts in your reading material. One of the pair write your words in the funnel. Next pair cannot repeat words/ideas that are already on the board. Class discussion - decide which words to keep. Do these need to go in your glossary?

6 Next..... In pairs, identify the 5 most important pieces of information/ideas/key points in the text (read both sides of the sheet!) “New Liberalism” You will compare with mine!

7 My selection New Liberals argued that the state had to intervene to help the most vulnerable in society It was a change in attitude NLs distanced themselves from socialists (broad appeal, class conflict & state ownership) Supported mainly by the middle classes Independent Labour Party would hold no appeal for the working class

8 TASK Read New Liberalism - Quotes and The Historian’s Verdict:
For each one identify: the motivations for and implications of New Liberalism find a good “quote” that sums up a key point and could be used in an essay

9 Old Liberalism Limited role for the state, emphasis on freedom and self reliance. Against the notion of “giving people something for nothing” (e.g. Welfare benefits) as it infringed personal freedoms. New Liberalism Adapted the concept of freedom to focus on freedom from poverty and hardship. This justified state interference and legislation to improve people’s living conditions, e.g. Social reforms. On your show me boards: How different would a New Liberal government be from the 19th century governments? (1-10) 10 being the most different. You will have to justify your opinion.
