NLs distanced themselves from socialists (broad appeal, class conflict & state ownership)
Supported mainly by the middle classes

9. Old Liberalism Limited role for the state, emphasis on freedom and self reliance. Against the notion of “giving people something for nothing” (e.g. Welfare benefits) as it infringed personal freedoms. New Liberalism Adapted the concept of freedom to focus on freedom from poverty and hardship. This justified state interference and legislation to improve people’s living conditions, e.g. Social reforms.
