1 The Circulatory System
Parts and Function

2 The Circulatory System is…
an organ system that passes nutrients (such as amino acids and electrolytes), gases, hormones, blood cells, , etc. to and from cells in the body

3 The 3 main parts of The Circulatory system
The Heart The Blood Vessels Blood

4 THE HEART

5 Parts of The Heart The Atria -Receiving Chambers The Ventricles
-Pumping Chambers The Valves -Controls Flow The Septum -Divides the Heart

6 Blood Vessels

7 Types of Blood Vessels Arteries -Carry blood away from the Heart
-The Aorta is the largest artery Veins -Veins contain valves -The Vena Cava is the largest vein Capillaries -Known as the “Distribution Pipes”

8 Blood

9 The Composition of Blood
The Plasma (Fluid) makes up 55% of the blood volume. The Solids (Cells) make up 45% of the blood volume.

10 Blood Plasma 97% Water Other 3% -Antibodies and Proteins
- Nutrients and Wastes

11 Blood Solids Red Blood Cells -Carry oxygen -Contain Hemoglobin
White Blood Cells -Attack bacteria & other invaders Platelets -Control the blood clotting process

12 Now Lets See Step by Step How Blood Flows Thru the Heart!
Day and night, the muscles of your heart contract and relax to pump blood throughout your body. When blood returns to the heart, it follows a complicated pathway. If you were in the bloodstream, you would follow the steps below one by one.

13 Step 1 Oxygen-poor blood (shown in blue) flows from the body into the right atrium.

14 Step 2 Blood flows through the right atrium into the right ventricle.

15 Step 3 The right ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs, where the blood releases waste gases and picks up oxygen.

16 Step 4 The newly oxygen-rich blood (shown in red) returns to the heart and enters the left atrium

17 Step 5 Blood flows through the left atrium into the left ventricle.

18 Step 6 The left ventricle pumps the oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body.
