What is Diversity? Any Thoughts? What is Cultural Competence?
7
What is Diversity? The concept of diversity includes acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and encouraging environment. It is about understanding each other In other words it is simply all the ways we are unique and different from others.

It is the process of being sensitive to issues related to culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, social class, economic situation, among other factors. Cultural competence requires gaining the necessary Knowledge, attitude, and skills in working with culturally diverse individuals. Lipson, Dibble & Minarik “To be culturally competent doesn’t mean you are an authority in the values and beliefs of every culture. What it means is that you hold a deep respect for cultural differences and are eager to learn, and willing to accept, that there are many ways of viewing the world.” ~ Okokon O. Udo ~
