1 Low-Energy and Low-Tube-Current CT for Positive Oral Contrast Media in Patients with Cancer: A Randomized Clinical Trial At low tube current or low energy with dual-energy CT, conventional concentrations of iodinated oral contrast media produce 78%–121% greater attenuation of the bowel lumen compared with barium-based contrast at 120 kVp. On the basis of qualitative reader assessments, standard and 25%-reduced concentrations of iodinated oral contrast media produced similar scores both for bowel labeling (2.3 vs 2.4) and for luminal opacification (2.9 vs 2.8) at CT acquired with low effective beam energy. Images in 54-year-old with gastric malignancy. CT performed with (a) barium-based oral contrast media at 120 kVp and (b) standard concentration of iodinated oral contrast media at 100 kVp revealed bowel attenuation of 284 and 726 HU, respectively.
