1 Machiavelli: Objective: to identify why Machiavelli is considered the “Father of political Science”. Read pages in Perspectives in the Past-voices from the past ‘the Dangers of Flattery’-answer questions to be able to discuss Machiavelli’s ideas. The Prince

2 prelude King Ferdinand (Spain) was excommunicated by Pope (Innocent VIII) because he refused to pay “feudal dues” to the papacy. So Innocent VIII excommunicates him and offers the Kingdom of Naples to France as Charles the VIII has a “loose” claim to the throne because Charles VII-his grandfather married into a prominent Sicilian family ( Marie Anjou-thus begins the Italian wars and the beginning of the end of the Italian Renaissance.

3 Important to note The French invasion of Italy in 1494 is widely seen as the beginning of the end of the Italian Renaissance. Charles VIII invaded Italy to lay claim to the Kingdom of Naples, which composed most of southern Italy. The French army marched through Italy with only minimal resistance. The invasion had a profound impact on Italian society and politics. The invasion of Charles VII changed the development of Italy and can be considered one of the primary reasons the Renaissance ended. The French Invasion was to lead to a series of wars that greatly weakened the Italian City-States, prompted a greater role for Spain in the peninsula and eventually led to the domination of Italy by the Spanish Monarchy.

League = Papacy, Milan, Spain, Sicily, Venice-who were looking to get away from Ottomans) Pretty much ends the Italian Renaissance as wealthy families are spending florins on war efforts and not art-in fact so is the Pope! The First Italian War, sometimes referred to as the Italian War of 1494or Charles VIII's Italian War, was the opening phase of the Italian Wars. The war pitted Charles VIII of France, who had initial Milanese aid, against the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and an alliance of Italian powers led by Pope Alexander VI. 11 Machiavellian advice to the President:
click Using your current events: Chose one from your group then identify the affair you are writing about and describe the issues surrounding the affair. i.e. If domestic explain why president is involved and how this issue could change the nation—give some background. If foreign explain why USA is involved and background information.

12 Step 2 : Identify who you are and why you would be writing this speech for the president—why would you advise him? Select some Machiavellian principles to apply to his approach to this situation.

13 Step 3 Address each issue that is concerning or connecting to the situation. i.e. If foreign you must explain how the foreign country feels about USA involvement and how the world community sees it also. Explain if there are various indigenous sides, maybe one that the USA is supporting. If domestic, explain if the issue is dividing our country or what groups of people are directly affected, is there a policy change, etc. Select a representative to present
