5.2 Equivalent Expressions
Math 9
2
A term is made up of a coefficient, a variable, and, an exponent.
3
Example 1: Identify Coefficients, Variables, and Exponents
Expression Coefficient Variable Exponent of Variable(s) 3c2 3 c 2 -x -1 x 1 b 7st2 7 st 1 & 2 *** Even if a term has two variables, it ALWAYS has only one coefficient.
4
Like terms are terms that only differ by their coefficients e.g.) 3x -2x e.g.) -5xy yx e.g.) z2 -3z2 0.35z2 e.g.) 17 -8
5
Unlike terms are terms whose variables are not the same.
e.g.) m2n & mn2 e.g.) 6x & 6x2 e.g.) 7 & 7d
6
Example 2: Identifying Like Terms
Identify the like terms in the following group: Give examples of three like terms 5xyz –xyz 36xyz 6t 3s 6t2 6st -8s 5st2 4s2t -st2
7
You can combine like terms together to simplify the algebraic expression.
8
Example 3: Combine the like terms
5x − 3x x − x2 5x + 2 x − 3x2 − x2 7x − 4x2
