2 Someone May NOT Get in… As you learned, Ellis Island did have restrictions in place. One person at a time, click on the buttons to find out if you will make it into the United States. Good Luck! Click here once every member of your party has had a chance to pick an outcome.

3 Did you make it in? As you can see, there was no guarentee you would make it into the country. Even if you did make it into the country, you still faced difficulties and obstacles. If you were an immigrant new to a country, even with all these obstacles, do you think you would have made it in the new country. Discuss… Next Station

4 Congratulations! Welcome to AMERICA!!!!
After weeks of living on the streets, you did finally find work in a sweatshop in New York City. You get to work for at least 10 to 12 hours each day, and you will make barely enough money to feed your children. Welcome to AMERICA!!!!

5 You did manage to find work building a railroad in southern New Mexico.
Unfortunately you do not have enough money for your family to follow you, so you had to leave your wife and child in a one room apartment in New York City. You do keep in touch by writing letters, and you try to send them any money you make. Hopefully soon you will earn enough money to have your family moved out west to join you.

6 You and your family came to America to mine gold
You and your family came to America to mine gold. You had enough money to buy supplies and headed out west. Though you did struggle for months with barely enough to eat, you eventually make your fortune when you discovered gold in a mine. Your family now has enough financial security for a nice home, a good education and a secure future.

7 Even though you tried to keep your past a secret, someone on the boat ratted you out to the authorities on Ellis Island. The police found out you were a thief back in England. You only stole money and food to support your 6 month old child, and you spent your last dollar booking this trip to America. You will be detained for a short while until arrangements can be made to send you and your family back to England.

8 Even though you are not a rich family, you did manage to buy some land in a new territory that will later be called the State of Iowa. You dreamed of owning your land, building a home and providing for your family. It seems you have fulfilled your version of the American dream. Congratulations & Good Luck!

9 To you, the American Dream meant moving out west to claim all the land you could for you and the future of your family. The trip was long and rough, but you made it safe and sound. In a few years after building a small house and raising cattle with your extended family, you find that someone special you want to start a family with. You and your family live happily ever after in the newly acquired land of the United States.

10 Many people in America do NOT like the idea of immigrants pouring into the country.
Some just complain about it. Others do something about it. You were not off the ship for more than an hour when you were attacked in an alley by a group of men. All of your possessions were taken from you. You live on the streets homeless, eating out of trashcans and begging for money. Maybe someone will offer you a kind hand and help get you back on your feet.

11 After leaving Ellis Island, you find a neighborhood of immigrants from the same country as you.
You all speak the same language and look after each other.

12 You can tell from the picture, things do not look good for your future.
As you already learned, it was not uncommon for immigrants to board a ship healthy, but contract a disease while in the steerage. Well…that is exactly what happened to you. With little to no money, you could not get the medical supplies you needed to fight the disease. Rest in Peace…
