2 Figure 1 Cadherin Switching Controls the Spatial Distribution of Rac Signaling to Determine Migratory Response to Cell-Cell Contact Upon contact, cells expressing N-cadherin (purple) downregulate Rac signaling at cell-cell junctions and redirect it to the free edge. This causes repolarization of protrusions and traction forces, leading to junctional disassembly and contact inhibition of locomotion (CIL). In contrast, cells that make adhesions through E-cadherin (green) upregulate Rac at the junctions, do not repolarize signaling and lamellipodia, and remain in contact with one another.
